Festival Commission Composer Eden Saunders
Eden is a young viola player from Gloucester who has been playing the violin since he was 7 and viola for the past 3 years.

He is a member of the acclaimed CBSO Youth Orchestra who regularly perform rich and challenging repertoire such as Mahler's Symphony No.6, Shostakovich Symphony No.7 (The Leningrad), Britten's Symphonia de Requiem in Symphony Hall Birmingham. With CBSO Youth Orchestra he has played under the baton of Mirga Gražinytė-Tyla and other visiting conductors such as the brilliant Micheal Seal.

Eden also plays in a quartet, the Gaudeamus Youth Strings, who play for weddings, dinners, events and in schools and more recently for community arts projects too. They also work with an aspiring pop singer, writing and performing with her. The quartet played twice in the Three Choirs Festival 2019 performing challenging and interesting pieces by local composers celebrating the life of two local poets, Will Harvey and Ivor Gurney - playing with both handbell musicians and a choral group was great fun!

Eden has been part of the Gloucester Academy of Music for the past four years and has been a Student Representative on the board there for the past year, which is a role he has really enjoyed. He has also played with Gloucestershire Youth Orchestra and plays regularly with the Gloucester Symphony Orchestra. As a member of these groups he has played in Gloucester Cathedral regularly and enjoyed being part of projects such as ‘The Big String’ which encourages and supports young string players.

Eden is a member of the South West Music School and has enjoyed many opportunities such as conducting workshops with them. He has been composing for the past few years and had a Tango of his performed at the Cheltenham Festival of Music in 2018 which was a fantastic experience.

This Autumn he will be auditioning for Music Conservatoire, hoping to begin an Undergraduate Performance Degree in 2020.

Music is Eden’s passion and great joy in life and he hopes to bring about similar feelings in the people to whom he plays to and to audiences who hear his compositions.
